What is the True Potential of Mobile Apps?

As the masses move away from conventional – or traditional if we can now call it that – internet usage, how are apps going to shape the future?

Hundreds of people are now developing apps all around the world. The sales platforms are there once an app is ready for launch and the market is clearly there and more and more apps are sold each day.

Most internet consumption is still delivered through a computer, despite the rising popularity of smartphones. However, will a shift soon be seen? As sales of devices such as the iPhone and Blackberry increase, will users adopt a new mobile means of internet delivery?

The potential of the devices on the market now is immense. Our craving for information can be satisfied at any time, almost anywhere. So far, the biggest positive impact for businesses has probably been constantly accessible email. A business and a business person can now be available all the time. Good for the person or not, customers and clients love availability and they love getting questions answered fast. For this reason, 24 hour email has been a revolution.

So, email has been a big thing. There are also many apps and developments that have led to mobile entertainment functionality. But, what will be the next big thing for business? What will be the serious innovation that will really have an impact on productivity?

Technology exists now to do almost anything. Paper could, in theory, become obsolete if applications can be developed to carry out all forms of office and field-based tasks. If an app can communicate with a main computer/database and that app can be installed on any device (so that any employee or member of an organisation can use it), the possibilities are endless.

It would be natural to think that business organisations will move faster than their employees but will it in fact be the other way around? Will employees become so reliant on the technology available to them that they will force the change and push businesses to improve their systems and processes?
