Online Crime: We Don’t Know the Half of it
We are constantly given advice to help us protect ourselves from online fraud. But we really don’t have a clue about the sophisticated methods now available to cyber criminals.
It is easy to think that online fraud is committed by one person, operating as a lone bandit. However, it is actually the case that online crime often involves as much manpower as a criminal gang running large-scale drug dealing operations in the real world.
The Times has revealed that identities, credit card details, email addresses, SKYPE account details, PIN numbers and even mothers’ maiden names are being bought and sold in the huge online trading platforms. The platforms used are so complex that they can hardly ever be viewed by the outside, but at least an insight has been given to help us stay more vigilant.
Online crime has progressed, and unfortunately with each new technology that comes about, there comes a new way of hacking, and a new way of exploiting any flaws in that technology for the personal gain of certain unscrupulous individuals.
