London: the Capital of Twitter
It would appear that London is a hotbed for Twitter activity. The founder and CEO of Twitter, Ev Williams, recently declared that London is home to the most activity on the social networking site.
Why is it that the micro-blogging service has become more popular in the UK? The American uptake of the service was huge, and it still is, but maybe the Americans have not capitalised on the perceived marketing power of Twitter yet.
Whether or not the service was designed to be another tool for marketing is not entirely clear. However, Twitter is an important marketing space. It is still a place where people can interact, ask questions and communicate with peers, but it is very difficult to avoid the hundreds of marketing messages posted around the clock.
So, is it possible that London, and the UK in general, has picked up on the marketing potential of Twitter to a greater extent than America, or anywhere else in the world for that matter?
Maybe it’s the case that UK users have found the temptation to procrastinate on Twitter more appealing than actually working! Although, it could be that UK users have managed to combine successfully the social aspect of this media service with its potential as a marketing tool.
Whereas Facebook and other social networking sites are frowned upon for being blatant platforms for communication and general procrastination, Twitter can be a platform for both communication on a social level and a business level. Answers can be found for all sorts of questions from people working in similar industries across the world.
Maybe London isn’t the place that would invent or innovate this sort of service, but the typical user of such a service is far better equipped to see the true potential of the communication platform available.
