When Search Met Religion
A young entrepreneur based in Amsterdam has created a search engine which is designed entirely Muslims. The search engine uses technology which flags up content that would be viewed as unsavoury/forbidden according to the Islamic religion.
The search engine will index results for all queries. However, if it deems a result to be potentially offensive it will flash up with a warning message which indicates on what level the returned content might disgust the user. The user can then decide to proceed and is given the option of allowing the results to be displayed or to abandon their search.
This innovative technology has not previously been exploited but it really could be a big step in search and internet usage in other areas of the world where religion plays a big part in what can and can’t be accessed online.
If this service picks up pace and looks like something that will last, it’s highly likely that Google will try and copy the technology. Or more likely, they’ll try and buy the technology/company and use it to dominate yet another market.
Whoever manages to fully utilise the concept will quite possibly become a big player in an area of online which has previously not figured so highly. Adapting existing services and technologies to fit markets and cultures less advanced – or more restricted – is the key to creating a world which is completely connected online.
