A new computer has been designed with the intention of encouraging people above the age of 60 to familiarise themselves with computers and the Internet. SimplicITy, the name given to the vastly simplified desktop which presents users with just six buttons, allows individuals to perform basic yet fundamental tasks such as e-mailing and chatting with loved ones.

One of the most popular features of this new computer, developed between Wessex Computers and a website designed for older people, is likely to be the manner in which help is always at hand. Computers can seem daunting to those who have never used them before but this model comes complete with 17 video tutorials hosted by the TV presenter, Valerie Singleton.

Younger users of computers, who rely upon the Internet for their personal and professional lives and have grown up in a world where computers are very much the norm, may find it difficult to believe that there is a large enough market to warrant designing this new PC. However, the government estimates that there are more than 6 million people over the age of 65 who have never used the Internet.

The computer, whilst developed with good intentions, is likely to split opinion. A large number of elderly people will no doubt welcome any attempt to include them in a world that can feel very alien and has the potential to cause much confusion. However, proponents of equal opportunities may use this as a chance to complain about the scheme being patronising. This said, there is opportunity for progression; if users feel they have got to grips with the SimplicITy desktop, they can replace it with a standard Linux desktop.
