Voting opens for Shorty Awards

The voting for the second annual Shorty Awards has started in earnest, with the best writers on Twitter hoping to be honoured at the awards ceremony in March in New York. It may sound like a bizarre concept but the reality is that the Shorty Awards are taken rather seriously in the industry.

The winners will be chosen via a popular vote alongside the opinion of the members of the Real-Time Academy of shortform arts and sciences and will derive from categories ranging from celebrities and humour, to government and politics, and food and customer service. Other categories reward small businesses, whilst others honour those involved in the tech and web industry.

If you feel the need to honour a Twitter user who has caught your eye with a particularly good track record of tweeting interesting, informative, or entertaining content, then you can nominate via the service itself, including the relevant hash tags and username, or you can visit the website and place your vote there. To get involved, all you need is a public Twitter account which is active. Campaigning is encouraged, so you should expect to see a fair few public pleas for votes appearing when you log into the service over the next few weeks.

The current leaders in some of the categories are slightly surprising but the standings are likely to change dramatically over the coming months. The Twitter user topping the celebrity category at the moment is Nathan Fillion, the Canadian actor, with actress Stana Katic also breaking into the top five. Unsurprisingly, some of the other category leaders are less shocking, with TweetDeck, TweetYouThere, and AggreTweet all sitting in the top five in the Apps category.
