Mobile Operators to Take on the Mighty App(le)
The major mobile phone operators and handset manufacturers are joining forces to create an open-source platform for developers to build apps for the masses.
This unusual development will see virtually all of the big players joining forces to take on Apple and its dominance of the mobile apps sector. Once this unity properly forms and the open-source platform is really taken advantage of, app developers will have a potential market size of around 3 billion.
Apple’s industry leading success in the app market makes them pretty tough competition. They have a huge share, they pioneered the concept of the mobile app with a connected store, and they have been fortunate in the fact that they have managed to encourage thousands of their loyal followers to become accomplished app developers.
The other mobile companies have a lot of work to do, but, if they can create a platform that people are happy to work with, the market available to them is so vast that Apple’s dominance may soon be a thing of the past.
